On January 3, 2006, relatives of prisoners held a protest demanding an end to torture and improved living conditions in prisons. At that time, inmates had been on a hunger strike for ten days.

The following day, on January 4, demonstrations continued both in Tbilisi and Kutaisi, though reports indicated that the number of hunger-striking prisoners had decreased — in Kutaisi Prison, only one inmate remained on strike.
