Protest outcome

Investigator Mariana Choloani arrested

On December 10, 2019, 15-year-old Luka Siradze was summoned for questioning at the police station. The basis for the interrogation was a report from the Green School. According to the director, a former student allegedly entered the school premises, damaged the property, and left graffiti, prompting the school to contact law enforcement. During questioning, police officers allegedly threatened the teenager and exerted psychological pressure to force a confession. Later that same day, Luka attempted suicide by jumping from the ninth floor of a building. He was critically injured.

One of the phrases Luka was believed to have written on the school wall was “Fuck this life.” This same phrase began appearing on the streets of Tbilisi shortly after the incident — first on the walls near the police station, then across the city — as a sign of solidarity and protest.

On December 17, Luka Siradze died in the hospital. Following his death, the investigator who questioned him, Mariana Choloiani of the Didube–Chughureti police division, was arrested.

On December 18, protests took place in several locations. The “Student Association,” together with other students and citizens, organized a protest-performance in front of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Rustavi main department. Protesters arranged candles spelling out Luka’s name and held signs reading “The system must fall!” and “Fuck this life!”

A protest was also held outside the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Ortachala, where participants blocked the road and painted “Fuck this life” on the asphalt. Demonstrations took place near the Dighomi police station as well. Earlier, a solidarity gathering was held outside Iashvili Children’s Hospital, where Luka had passed away — activists left flowers and candles. Vigils and solidarity actions spread across Georgia, including in Zugdidi, Gori, Kutaisi, and Rustavi, where activists and citizens painted the same slogan on public walls.

The musical group IV Dasma dedicated a song to Luka Siradze’s story.

On September 7, 2020, the Tbilisi City Court sentenced investigator Mariana Choloiani to three years in prison for coercing testimony from Luka Siradze. About a year later, on August 5, 2021, she was released early following a decision by the local parole board.
