On June 7, 2011, the Revenue Service simultaneously entered six companies belonging to the “Mediapalitra” holding and sealed the warehouses of four of them. This move sparked public outrage. Other media outlets, representatives of civil society, and opposition politicians expressed solidarity with “Mediapalitra.” The Coalition for Media Advocacy — an alliance of organizations working on media issues — suspected that the inspection might have been linked to the fact that “Palitra” had extensively covered the violent dispersal of the May 26, 2011 protest by the police.
On June 13, following the coalition’s initiative, all print newspapers published the headline “Solidarity with Mediapalitra!” on their front pages. The weekly Kviris Palitra featured the message “Thank you for your solidarity!”
Journalist Zviad Koridze explained that the purpose of this campaign was twofold: first, to remind the government that economic tools must not be used to pressure the media, and second, to help journalists realize how vital solidarity is in such moments.
The inspection of the “Palitra” companies ultimately lasted more than 50 days and concluded with only minor fines.
